Spirit of the Village is a magical realism novel that ask the question, what if that Christmas village so many families have displayed on their tables what a real world. It' a question my imagination has never let me forget from the time I was a child myself. And after a decade of notes about how to bring it alive I finally have.
The release date is Oct. 1.
After his father dies, a young boy discovers that his family's Christmas village, built and added to over 30 years, isn't just a model. It's somehow it's own living, real world. He discovers his father is there, in a way, living among the same handmade buildings that used to sit on a table in the basement. But the village is falling apart, and there's a deadline before it's gone for good, along with any real chance the family has left to say goodbye.
It's magical realism, but the magic was never really the point for me. This book is about grief, the specific, complicated shape it actually takes. The way it lives in small objects and repeated gestures. The way a family can love each other completely and still fail each other in the exact moment they need each other most. Six siblings, all handling the same loss in different ways, and a mother who isn't ready to let go the way everyone assumes she should be.
It comes in around 80,000 words, contemporary setting, with a Christmas backdrop.
I'm not looking for guaranteed five stars. I'd rather have your honest reaction, whatever it turns out to be. If this sounds like your kind of book and you have some time before release, I'd be genuinely grateful for the read. And your honest review on Amazon and Goodreads.
Comment or message me if you're interested and I'll get a copy your way. I have both PDF and epub files available upon request.
Thank you for taking the time to read this topic. I'm grateful for even one person offering to read it.
