Really? And I already think that the film is terrible...
I zoned out in every other paragraph when I read this in high school and had to backtrack repeatedly, Rice drones on so much. Eventually I gave it to a friend.
This is one of my all-time favorite books since I read it in 7th grade, but I get it. The book is far more melodramatic than the movie, and there's a few plot points that don't have a point. I haven't re-read it in sometime, and it's one of those "favorite books" that I don't want to re-read because I don't my feelings to change on it.
Weird, I had the opposite book-vs-film reaction...both as a teenager when the latter first came out, and again when more recently re-reading the book and subsequently re-watching the movie. Like, "I'm in love with this story and these characters, and I (mostly) like how the film brings it to life on screen...but for anyone who hasn't read the book, how the hell does half of this even make sense (particularly in the second half, with Louis's connection to Armand)?" And Brad Pitt would go on to be one of the greatest, most fascinating actors of his generation, but as Louis...When he says, "But all my passion went with the golden hair," I'm like, "What passion? You've spent the whole movie acting like a sad tree, and you're still acting like a sad tree."
That said...Yeah, all the stuff with Claudia, yikes! Re-reading it in my 40s, I'm a lot more "WHOAH, WTF, Anne?" than in my teens or even 20s.
