As to the Great Deku tree links to Zelda - that was completely wasted on me (and the whole metaverse story around Harun was my least favourite part of the novel).
See you've also said "as an aside this is one of the novel’s rare missteps as the rise of AI over VR has already rather overtaken the future vision presented here" - although the novel is set in 2018 I guess (presumably to avoid Covid?), and Zuckerberg only seemed to wake up to the death of the metaverse in 2025
And agree this should have been on the Booker - and taken the place of John of John or Strout's book, which are so much less ambitious as family sagas
