Terrific review!!
This book is unbelievably powerful. And you have put it nicely: On the surface, nothing extraordinary happens.
It goes the same for the ending, so simple, so human, so non-eventful, yet stays with you for a long time.
No wonder, whoever asks what fiction book I recommend, the answer is always immediate and the same: Stoner.
I have been wondering why this stayed on my TBR list so long! Time to give it a bump up.

John Williams didn’t produce a large body of work, yet *Stoner* is being rediscovered by more and more readers. Do you generally gravitate toward such overlooked classics, or do you also read current bestsellers? I’m curious to know what else sits on the bookshelf of someone who rates *Stoner* a perfect ten.
Thanks Lisa. I love all kinds of books--fiction and nonfiction, memoir, thriller, narrative nonfiction, literary novels--you name it. My favorite is literary novels. When I find a great one it's true joy.
