Try his recent alien contact on a strange world book, Shroud. Hard SF. Or his stranger in a strange land book where high tech clashes with magic, Elder Race (and the most recent sequel, Engines of Reason - both novellas.)

Oh, I'll definitely be looking out for Tchaikovsky's name going forward. My son read the book after me in a single day and liked it a lot too. Thanks for the recommendations!

I am a big Tchaikovsky fan - he writes equally good fantasy and SF, and he's a machine, cranking out books at a rate that amazes me they are still as good as they are.
