I should learn Italian?
@scarr honestly I read this book and was like “I should pick Turkish back up” haha. Learn the language that’s Italian to you!
My friend read and loved this book! And absolutely yes! We should all learn all the languages we're able (assuming we're moved to). It's *not* theft; it's a kind of ardor. ... I guess like ardor, it can be rejected, and I suppose if I met a community that was dead set against my learning their language, I'd back away, but I have yet to encounter that....
... the languages I've wanted most to learn in my life are ones I have no more connection to than Lahiri does to Italian.
@Francesca “ardor” is such a great word! And yeah one of the things Lahiri writes about is that idea of “their language,” “our language” - and the limits of that binary.
