i liked the first chapters before it went downhill for me 😬
I progressively enjoyed it more and more... and the ending is absolutely incredible (the clues were already there and I hadn’t even noticed)!
For me it was a waist of time: the one of those books that flatters its readers into a feeling of perceiving themselves as well-read intellectuals with a view of how a modern society should be. But in reality this text just tries too hard and does what has been done before many times and much better.

a dnf for me, even if it is the shortest book on the longlist.

I agree. I don't understand why it was on the Longlist.
I really liked this after it was released (& just after reading The Shame), but tried to listen to the audiobook & whoah… my worst audiobook experience yet!! too overdone or something‽
Interesting how very differently readers have experienced this one, it's clearly such a subjective read! I personally really enjoyed it, though can see why it'd be divisive.
Sorry to hear this was a waste of paper (and time). Hope your next read will be more enjoyable!
Sorry it was a disappointment. I almost never read current prize winners/contenders (and mostly avoid books recommended by the NYTBR); I rarely like any of them. But then I am usually an outlier in any group.

I had the same feeling and stopped reading it. There are a lot more interesting books on the list that I wanted to read first. Wouldn’t be surprised if it won.
