Well, I like Rollins and Ludlum so there goes another one on my TBR list. I just finished Black Order by Rollins and very much enjoyed to whole theme of the book so this sounds like one I will enjoy as well.

Great Review!

Jim Bernard Cornwell is one of my favorite historical fiction writers. I've been reading & listening to his Sharpe books. They follow an English soldier during the Napoleonic Wars period. Excellent! Here's my review of the first one, Sharpe's Tiger.

Cora Tea Party Princess I'm not sure if it's historical, being set in the 1920s, but here is my review regardless.

This is a pretty wonderful book and I'm still not sure what happened.

Jonetta This is Historical Romance.

The Viper by Monica McCarty

My Review

This is the fourth book in the series so I wouldn't recommend reading it if you're not up to date in the series. I'd recommend reading the review for the first book in the series, The Chief.

Review of The Chief, first book in the Highland Guards series.

I have seen this book recommended or on several TBR lists lately, and decided to read it after reading your review.

Margitte Cutting for Stone - Abraham Verghese

African - Ethiopia, Madras-India, Boston, New York-USA, cultural, family,
fiction, novel

My review

A remarkable tale with a surprising twist in the end that makes it worth tot take on and stick with it to the end, I promise! It is not strictly historical fiction per se because it is a contemporary book about the life in Ethiopia and elsewhere, but it does contain facts about the a segment of Ethiopian history that will become a great historical tale in future.

Margitte Trade winds to Meluhha by Vasant Davé

Middle-East, Bronze Age, historical fiction, murder mystery

My review

The Bronze Age comes to life in this book, and the story has the potential to
become a brilliant read if serious editorial polish can be applied to the text.

Margitte The Bookseller of Kabul  - by Åsne Seierstad, Ingrid Christopherson
(Translator)

Afghanistan - memoir, investigative journalism

My review
I did not tiptoe through the tulips on this one, I am afraid. And it is, again, not a new publication as well.

It is promoted as a novel which it is not in my opinion, so I did not shelved it either under historical fiction nor a novel.

Margitte Lacey's House by Joanne Graham
England, fiction, NetGalley, 2013 release

My review

This first novel had me grasping for a dictionary, an internet thesaurus, a love letter,a mundane telephone conversation - basically anything to recover some
logic and objectivity to write a deserving review.

I thought I lost my words forever. It just struck a cord too high for anyone to come by in my soul. Oh but that's just me. I tend to throw praise around and blame my hormones afterwards for the almost indecent indulgence in it! Sometimes a book just hit me at the right time, right place, in the right mood, you know!

Jim I decided to re-read John Jakes Bicentennial series. It's been a lot of years since it first came out & I read it, but I've remembered it fondly. The TV mini-series were good, too.

I wondered if the writing would still seem as good. After all, my introduction to Jakes was Brak the Barbarian. I have to say, the first book, The Bastard, didn't disappoint. I gave it 5 stars. My review is here:

Tim The Enchanter I just finished my first novel by Bernard Cornwell - Sharpe's Tiger. An exciting 4 star read and first of a series. I am looking forward to reading the second installment.

Jim Tim, I've read several of the Sharpe books & like them a lot, too. They're also very good as audio books.

Tim The Enchanter Sharpe's Triumph - Sharpe's Triumph (Sharpe, #2) by Bernard Cornwell

The second exciting book in Cornwell's "Sharpe" series.

My review - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Jim, I have enjoyed the first two. Looking forward to the rest.

message 42: by Jim (new)

Jim Glad you're liking them, Tim. I need to get back in to them, too. It's unfortunate that my library doesn't have more of them in audio.

Tim The Enchanter Haven't tried the audio. I prefer to read my HF.

message 44: by Jim (new)

Jim I've 'read' them both ways. Can't say I have a real preference, but practicality has given audio books more of an edge the past couple of years. I read all day for work (computers) & like to be more active in my free time. My eyes are getting worse, so audio books are a great answer.

message 45: by Jim (new)

Jim I've read 2 more of the Casca books. I gave 4 stars to The Legionnaire here:

I could only give 2 stars to The Trench Soldier, though. That might have been a bit generous. It's a shame.

Tim The Enchanter Finshed The Clan of the Cave Bear - The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1) by Jean M. Auel . For me, it was a five star read. It was so different from what I have read, I found it difficult to review.

My review attempt - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Tim The Enchanter I am so disappointed after finishing, The Valley of Horses - The Valley of Horses (Earth's Children, #2) by Jean M. Auel . I loved the first book but this one simply dissolved into a prehistoric love story. Blah. Not my cup of tea

message 50: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge Finished reading Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein Code name Verity by Elizabeth Wein (Book on CD performed by Morven Christie & Lucy Gaskell) – 4****
This is a young-adult book, a war story, a spy novel, and a story of an unforgettable friendship. “Verity” is arrested by the Gestapo in northern France. Deprived of sleep, clothes, and food, subject to various tortures, she finally begins to write her “confession.” War is never romantic, and this book certainly points that out, but it also brings to light the role that many women played in the war. And I particularly liked the way it explored a multi-faceted and deep friendship, and how the situations they found themselves in forced them to make difficult decisions in the name of that friendship. Morven Christie & Lucy Gaskell do a fine job narrating the audio version.
