She is the anointed heir of a God the crown abandoned — chosen in the dark, and terrified of the daylight.
Astor Drake is the prince tasked with guarding the throne from pretenders — and from anyone who would wear the crown the way his adoptive father does. He never wanted it for himself. He fears he’d be no better than Tyr, and so he holds the line and waits for the one thing that would let him lay it down: a sign that God will send someone worthier to rule. But Tyr has festered on the throne for years, and Heaven has stayed silent. Astor has stopped believing the sign will ever come.
Neither of them knows they are praying for each other.
Bound by a betrothal neither wants, Nessara and Astor circle a court rotting from within, a counterfeit fire devouring the king, and a war built on lies — each of them the answer the other has stopped believing in. But the nearer they come to the truth, the nearer Nessara comes to an impossible choice: keep the secret that keeps her safe, or claim the calling that will cost her the one person she was never meant to love.
