There's a certain amount of 'hand-waving' involved in the storyline I have to admit that, the way I generally explain it is that the concept is 'Dr Who' but with fantasy. The world just accepts him and carries on as usual with his presence accepted by people largely with relatively little reaction in the same way that Aliens are in Dr Who. Why he's a good teacher and that side of things will be explained more in later books, but with regards to his knowledge of his subject - I figure he's a fairly quick learner and a voracious reader.
