I'm glad you enjoyed it too, Bonnie! It's such a subtle, moving book.
Did you read Whale Fall, Meike? If not, I suspect you would enjoy it. It embraces similar themes, and for me landed slightly better, though both novella impressed.

No, I haven't read Whale Fall, but it certainly sounds like I should try it!

I think you will find it worth your time. I think it is even shorter than this book, so it is an easy commitment. Also, I heartily recommend you listen to that one -- I thought the narration was brilliant.

I hope you do, Karen, and at the risk of repeating myself (from my message to Meike) the audio is lovely.
Gloria wrote: "Love that moody cover and the book sounds so interesting!"
I agree that the cover is gorgeous, Gloria, and it is a perfect fit for the book. Not a lot happens here, but I found it entirely immersive. I hope you like it if you give it a try.

Whale Fall is quite good, Justin. It is also, like this book, quite brief. I am not quite sure I have a feel for what you have been liking in the last year or so, your choices seem to have changed a bit, but overall I recommend that book,
I, too, loved Whale Fall which came to me serendipitously through a LFL. I have looked at this one, though it did not call to me as much. I'm still on the fence though ending on a hopeful note is a draw.

I am trying to figure out what LFL stands for, and have come up with some interesting options 😂. If you liked Whale Fall, I think you will like this, Lisa, when you are in the mood. It is very well written and has a wistful heart-squeezing quality that is great if you are in the right mood for that.

LFL = Little Free Library
They are in abundance where I live, though I seldom find books that I want to read in them. 😂 I do occasionally score a good one, though!
Ahhhh. Thanks for clarifying! In NYC most apt buildings, mine included, have a table where people leave books and other small things for people to take, and we have an area on campus for that too, so old school LFL. I get books that way on occasion. Last week I scored 2 brand new Molskines tha way!
We're clearly dovetailing in our reading interests. Very nice review. I'm glad Wood didn't overplay the ending (happily ever after, etc.).

We often have similar reactions to books, Bob, though your insights always light up things I did not see, which is fun. I read this back in January, and I think it is telling that the reading experience still feels pretty fresh. It is amazing how much Wood gave me to think about in such a slim book. Have you read any of his earlier books? I have thought about hitting that back catalogue but have not yet gotten to it.

Thanks, Jonathan! This one was a very pleasant surprise. When I heard the description, I was worried it would be too similar to Whale Fall, which I had read just a few months before. Happily, the books worked well as companions, but they did not step on each other's toes. (I know that begs the question, so for these purposes, yes, books have toes.)
