What stayed with me most was the way Western treats incarceration not simply as a criminal-justice outcome, but as something that can reshape employment, family stability and entire communities long after the formal sentence ends. I think that broader lens is one of the book's real strengths. Once incarceration becomes concentrated heavily enough in particular populations, it is difficult to separate questions about punishment from questions about inequality and what happens after someone returns home.
