This is all the favourite cycle of the novels of my husband. So it is popular on our house. He event went for an event with Powell's biographer a few years ago. But that is also the reason I've not read it yet:-)

What a superb review Jeroen. Anthony Powell has always been on the outer reaches of my radar but I have never read any of his novels. With such a review, I am now placing him at the top of my ever growing list.

Hopefully the cycle continues on a similar elan, Jeroen - it truly sounds top-notch! If it wasn't against my religion to read in English in France, I likely would do a second attempt to make a start with Powell this summer, but George Sand has been patiently waiting for decades and it would be only fair to finally read her in this year marking the 150th anniversary of her death. In the meantime I look forward to savour more of your thoughts on the next volumes, and wish you many more hours of reading pleasure with the cycle!

Hi Ilse. I started rather slowly in the fourth novel last week (as, sadly, I am back at the office now). So far, it definitely has the exact same appeal as the first three. I love the style of the book, find myself alternating between chuckles and misty eyes.
George Sand has been on my list for quite some years now. I want to read "François le Champi" every since I finished "La Recherche" and realised that the book the narrator picks up in the Prince de Guermantes library is the one his mother was reading from to him 3000 pages earlier.
As to my musings about Powell, rest assured, I want there to be more....

Thanks a lot Path! It was my pleasure writing this up. Usually, when reading a sequence, I reserve my opinion until the very end and only write reviews once I have turned the last page. In this case, however, I couldn't resist an intermediary assessment. Maybe also because the series is also about that, i.e. about how our opinions on people, life and other things evolve over time. I am myself very curious to see where this series will take me. Also very curious to read about your impressions when you get to it. This one is definitely a book that invites discussion among friends and fellow readers. Have a lovely day!
