L.B. Shire I loved the Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefwater, To Paint the Wind by Pam Munoz Ryan, and San Domingo:The Medicine Hat Stallion by Marguerite Henry

message 9: by Mikayla (new)

Mikayla I actually own the first 4 chestnut hill books in the series, Canterwood Crest(first book) and the first two wildwood stables books. But I've only read the chestnut hill ones .. Is that sad ? (I just haven't had time to read those because I have sooooo many library books..)

Clare O'Beara I have just reviewed the following book. It is not published yet but will be soon, and the author is on Goodreads and has several more horse books on her page. You can see my full review and decide if you would like to read the book.

Wind Dancer by Chris Platt
ISBN: 9781561457366

A cantankerous elderly lady is failing to care for her two fine Appaloosa horses. She may be going senile. So Ali and Cara think, anyhow. They sneak into the barn one night and find the horses are thirsty and starved. Reporting the matter to Nevada animal control, the girls hope not to get into trouble.

Clare O'Beara I've just read The Husband Campaign by Regina Scott. This is a historical romance and set in England; there are plentiful horses. See my review.

THE HUSBAND CAMPAIGN resembles a Jane Austen tale. Regina Scott has filled her inspirational story with characters, both two-legged and four-legged, and the romance can be read without blushing.

Clare O'Beara Beyond the Sunset (Unicorn's Secret)
by Kathleen Duey
I've just reviewed this. She has a series about the unicorns and another few series about mustangs.

This is ideal for girls under ten who love fantasy - but I enjoyed it and I'm not ten.

message 13: by Lara (new)

Lara O'Brien Chesca and the Spirit of Grace by Lara O' Brien.

Just finished book tour . Great interest and children turnout for events. Check it out.

message 14: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara SECRETARIAT REBORN by Susan Klaus.
I have just reviewed this adult racing thriller, which deals with cloning horses and other dodgy racetrack deals.

message 15: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara My Secret Fantasies by Joanne Rock is an adult romance, set on a northern California stud farm. The horses are well written and the characters are also good with believable and interesting situations.
I've reviewed it.

message 16: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara I've just reviewed Born Wild by Joe Camp. The author produced the Benji family films.
This book tells of the mustangs he and his wife adopted and how mustangs are being taken off the land in increasing numbers, often sold for meat.

Clare O'Beara I've reviewed a paranormal fantasy called Montana Mustangs by Danica Winters. This is an adult romance novel. While the concept of shapechanging horse-persons is not new, this book focuses more on a murder mystery.

message 18: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara I've reviewed a brilliant horse book for young adults, called Chesca And The Spirit Of Grace. This is set in Ireland in modern times.
The author Lara O'Brien is on Goodreads if you want to chat to her!

message 19: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara I've reviewed a book for adult readers called The Versailles Legacy about eventing in Germany in 1936. Politics, history and difficult personal relationships make this definitely one for adult readers with an interest in the setting. The horse details are well described and help to bring the background to life.
The author is on Goodreads.

message 20: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara I've reviewed Pegasus by Robin McKinley.
While this book has its good points, I felt it suffered from not having any action or danger whatsoever. The tale is padded and drags towards the end, then stops suddenly when it is clear that there is going to be trouble shortly. We are expected to buy the next book.
The descriptions of the pegasi are lovely.

message 21: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara I've reviewed Turning On A Dime which is a time-travel young adult book! Great horse theme.

message 22: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara I've reviewed Appaloosa Summer which tells of a young lady having to pick herself up after losing her competition horse and start again.

This is really well written and subtly romantic.

message 23: by Kim (new)

Kim Hampton The Heartland series by Lauren Brooke is excellent, as is the Saddle Club series by Bonnie Bryant. And don't forget The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans. I didn't care for the movie at all but the book was excellent.

message 24: by Amy (last edited Sep 19, 2014 12:05PM) (new)

Amy Elizabeth I'd like to add my series to the list, suitable for older teens and adults. It's set on a dude ranch in Wyoming with plenty of horses, action, and romance! Cut and Run (Aspen Eyes, #1) by Amy Elizabeth Indian Summer (Aspen Eyes, #2) by Amy Elizabeth Showdown (Aspen Eyes, #3) by Amy Elizabeth

Clare O'Beara I've just published my first YA horse book. This is:
Show Jumping Team

Show Jumping Team by Clare O'Beara

The story is set in modern Ireland. I hope you enjoy the read.

message 26: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara I've just reviewed a young adult book set on a stud farm; this is a mystery.
Ride a Dark Horse
Ride a Dark Horse by Lynn Hall

I enjoyed this and the author has written several other horse and dog stories.

message 27: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara I've just released my second young adult horse book:
Rodeo Finn
Rodeo Finn by Clare O'Beara
This is set partly in modern Ireland and partly in Arizona.

My first YA book (see above) is selling well with no advertising so there is clearly a demand for this kind of book and that is why I brought forward publication of the second. This is not a series.

If anyone here would like to read a Pdf copy and review it, please get in touch!

message 29: by Kim (new)

Kim Hampton I read a series of books when I was younger about a girl and her Palomino mare. For the life of me, I couldn't remember the name of the series. My mom happened to be in my old bedroom the other day, was looking at my bookshelf, and saw a book she thought my 8 year old daughter would enjoy. Was I ever surprised when Katy came home with one of the series! They were called The Linda Craig Adventures. I think I had about 8 books in the series, not sure if they made more or not. I think a trip to my parent's house is in order to investigate my bookshelf!

Clare O'Beara I have a book about a beautiful palomino stallion called Orbit:
Horse in the House
Horse in the House by William Corbin
This is a great read. I have not read the series you mention.

I'll have to check this one out! I have a weakness for Palominos. Lost my sweet Palomino mare, China, in January after 25 years together. I miss her every day.

Thanks Clare, added it to my to-read list. We're coming up on the first anniversary of China's passing (Jan. 15) and I'm missing her more than ever. My hubby has started working on tidying up her gravesite and I'm going to plant some flowers around it.

message 37: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara I'm sorry you've lost your mare. My two are dead some years now; I still miss them.

message 38: by Kim (new)

Kim Hampton Thank you. We had 25 years together before I had to have her put down at age 28. She was one of a kind.

message 39: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara More Palomino mares to be found in:
Quarter Horse Boy
This is a standalone YA story set in Australia. The first mare I think is called Fool's Gold and her foal is called Golden Perina.

Kathleen Marentes Hey, everyone! I'm looking for a book I read when I was a kid and I can't remember the name. It's about a girl who goes riding into the hills/mountains, and she finds a foal that's trapped and brings it home. The horses in their town start dying of a mysterious illness, but the new foal never gets sick. They then discover the foal is the means for the cure for the other horses. Did anyone ever read that and by chance remember what it was called?

Hi Kathleen,
I don't know the book but there is a great British website/blog run by a lady called Jane Badger, which to my knowledge is the most comprehensive site on pony books past and present. She also wrote a book about the genre Heroines on Horseback: The Pony Book in Children's Fiction. If you write her a mail, she might well know the title of the book you are after. Her web address is http://booksandmud.blogspot.co.uk/201...

That's Jean Slaughter Doty's Yesterday's Horses (edited because I always forget I can link here). I haven't read it but I remember the unique premise.

message 48: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Marentes Anna and Stephanie, thank you so much!! I believe that is the book I was looking for! I was disappointed to see my library doesn't carry it, but Amazon has it for a penny so I think I'll just buy it and keep it! Thanks a bunch!

message 49: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara Haven't read that one Katherine but it sounds interesting.

The horse illness theme came up in The Black Stallion And Satan. That was swamp fever.
Also in one of Anne McCaffrey's Pern books, when the large runnerbeasts catch an infectious disease but the small light ones are kept up in the mountains so their riders hope they won't succumb.

I remember really liking it as a kid, and I had always wanted to read it again, but couldn't remember the name. Another good book I had as a kid was A Horse Called Holiday, about a girl who discovers her new horse is deaf. Did anyone ever read that one?
