Razvan Zamfirescu Oh, and right on time - now I see the date. Perfect timing :) Respect! Proud to have such a GR friend :)

message 3: by Xandra (new)

Xandra Thank you, Razvan! And you don't have to censor yourself around me. I can handle the f-word. :)

Nicolae This is a great review!

message 5: by Xandra (new)

Xandra @Nicu: Thanks! I wish more people would give Ulysses a chance. It's not the monster everyone thinks it is.

message 6: by Nicolae (new)

Nicolae I want to read this book but I have a romanian edition, one of the worst that I have ever tried to read. It has small letters and the space among rows is very tight. This is what makes me to stop reading.

message 7: by Xandra (new)

Xandra If you know English well, you could try reading it in original. In my opinion it's the best way, especially since it's a difficult book to translate and I think much is lost in translation (puns, imitations of sounds, etc). For example, there is a chapter that is pure style, where Joyce shows the evolution of the English language. I bet it was a nightmare to translate.

Nicolae I will. Did you read "Finnegans wake"? I heard it is almost ipossible to be translated.

message 9: by Xandra (new)

Xandra Nope. Finnegans Wake intimidates me. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough. Not yet.

Warwick This is fab.

message 11: by Xandra (new)

Xandra Thank you, Warwick.

message 12: by Ed (new)

Ed Ugh! Is she limping? Lucky I didn't see it earlier.

This line got me.

Nicola That review deserves to be printed and put up on my wall! I could have saved myself a lot of pain and just read something like this :-)

Ah, such happy memories! (of finishing it)

Warwick Ten years later and this is still fab.
