This has been on my TBR for ages - I really need to pause the arcs and start digging into my own reading wish list. I like your take here as someone who's not traditionally drawn to the subgenre, is there anything else you've read to which you'd compare The Possession of Alba Díaz?
Besides William Peter Blatty's Exorcist, I'm not sure, because I don't read much of this subgenre. Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia has a really cool supernatural/occult element. I started reading her last year and fell in love with her novels. I've now read all twelve. I've officially referred to her as my favorite novelist. I like her the best, for sure. Have you read Silver Nitrate? Or anything by Silvia Moreno-Garcia?
Exorcist I loved so that's a promising comparison, and the only Silvia Moreno-Garcia I've read so far was Gods of Jade and Shadow (which was stellar) but I've had Mexican Gothic and The Bewitching recommended to me countless times and both are on the TBR. I haven't heard of Silver Nitrate but will add it to my Kindle today, and I'd love to exchange a list of favorites with you! I trust your recommendations and can already think of a few of my own favorites that I bet you'd enjoy!
Yes, please! I'd love to hear some of your recommendations. In case you're on Instagram, you can also find me there @stevezappa_author
Hemingway and Proust have had a big impact on me as an author. Proust would obviously be In Search of Lost Time. And for Hemingway my top recs are The Sun Also Rises and For Whom the Bell Tolls. That's my favorite era of literature. Virginia Woolf, James Joyce. I've been heavily considering writing my next book (probably novel) inspired by a certain F. Scott Fitzgerald short story, taking place around 2008, partly in Nashville and partly in Iraq. I also love Toni Morrison and Dostoevsky. The Brothers Karamazov is maybe my favorite novel. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier has been my favorite read so far this year. I also loved Japanese Gothic by Kylie Lee Baker, which came out this year.
So what about you? Aside from here and Instagram, if you want you can also email me at stevezappa.author@gmail.com
