Trish (Beautiful Chaos Reviews) You know I felt that was perfect considering Emily's stilted way of writing as she's discribing most things she encounters in this village. She tends, as I would think a faery scholar would, to over describe everything. But I felt it just fit in and I enjoyed it. But that's just my opinion. I enjoy your reviews and TikToks. I am interested to see where you land with this one.

Ceinwen Langley The excerpt you posted on insta was... enough for me.

message 3: by Jenni (new)

Jenni Look at you. Almost DNFing again.

Stephanie McRae Oh no!! It had such promise too!

message 5: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Oof. That’s a bummer.

message 6: by em (new)

em my exact thoughts. i dnfed around 50%

Baby steps. I'll get there someday... ;__;

message 8: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I am about 12% into the book and I am considering DNFing it. I am SO bored and I'm not really enjoying the writing. I have only DNF'd two books in my lifetime, and I keep hoping this one gets better, but I'm slowly thinking that it won't.

message 9: by Clarissa (new)

Clarissa Carter I also came close to DNF but stuck it out. I agree that for a large part of the book it was roo many words and not enough plot/action. I did not get an autistic/neuro divergent vibe from Emily. I found her to be what I would expect from a woman in her position. She's a loner and not used to dealing with people on an extended basis. Buries herself in her work and expects to be left alone.

🌸 Bookish Hobbit 🌸 My thoughts aswell

jasmine ʕ´•ᴥ•`ʔ Oh no, this book looked so interesting its on my tbr😩

message 12: by Adriane (new)

Adriane Oh no! Removed from my TBR. I couldn’t deal with 300 pastes of that.

message 13: by Wren (new)

Wren I’m two chapters in and going absolutely batty over how almost every sentence starts with “I”. A single paragraph should not consist of six sentences, all of which start as some variation of “I did this. I did that. I also did this and that.” 😬 I think it’s a DNF for me as well. Glad I’m not alone!

message 14: by Myreads (new)

Myreads Just finished this and agree wholeheartedly. Big disappointment.

message 15: by Becci (new)

Becci Thank you! I felt the exact same way but saw all these 5 star reviews and wondering if id somehow missed everything

message 16: by Stacy (new)

Stacy Mitchell Same....page 150 and just can't go on...truly disappointed 😒

message 17: by Bek (new)

Bek Ivyrosenyx I'm really struggling to finish this. Most books I don't want to end as I love the story and the characters but I find myself just wanting this one to end.

message 18: by Amel (new)

Amel Hamed The end will just make you scream and wish you didn’t finish it. Whyyyyyy is this book popular

message 19: by Carlotaalvz (new)

Carlotaalvz Exactly what I thought through all the book.

message 20: by Kaila (new)

Kaila I thought the main character was actually pretty relatable to introverts like myself. Additionally, the characters show slow, but definite growth thought the book. Overall, it wasn't supposed to be overly exciting, but more cozy and interesting.

message 21: by Regan (new)

Regan Y. I’m about 20% in and this is exactly how I feel! My friend told me when the MMC comes in is when it starts getting good but he’s boring with his charm.

message 22: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay Descoteaux 60% in and also feeling this way, but I won’t DNF because I’m stubborn lol

message 23: by Maddison (new)

Maddison Foss-Cormier You summed up my thoughts perfectly. I was so excited for this but the hype was decidedly not real.

message 24: by Rida (new)

Rida Quraishi Oh my god!!! Thank you for this review!! I feel the exact same way and I thought I was the only one!!
I was so surprised to see that this is just 300 pages?? Because I feel I've been reading this book since forever.
It's definitely overwritten and I am this close 🤏🏻 to dnfing it myself

message 25: by Hetal (new)

Hetal Im 57% through and quite bored. It feels SO dry and too much like a textbook. I kept going because I LOVE the author's other duology, Even the Darkest Stars. But if it doesn't get better by 65%, I may DNF. The overwriting and detail saturated journal entries and musings just aren't my style.

message 26: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth This is basically my opinion.

message 27: by Suze (new)

Suze Agreed. I wanted to like it but I was bored 😭

message 28: by Lisa Marie (new)

Lisa Marie Agreed. My brain hurt just starting it

message 29: by ✨ Maude ✨ (new)

✨ Maude ✨ As an autistic woman I must say the way Emily is autistic coded is hum… kinda garbage ? It’s giving “not like other girls” autism edition and I just 🤢

message 30: by Amy (last edited Jun 08, 2023 08:28AM) (new)

Amy I don't generally put a lot of stock in reviews by people I don't know, but yours really helped me realize that I should avoid this book. Thanks!

message 31: by Brandie (new)

Brandie Agreed. I was listening to the audiobook and made it maybe an hour before realizing I couldn't care much less about these characters

Treasure Box Of Books And here I thought maybe it was just me in a book funk? I'm only 15% in and I'm bored to death. Nothing is keeping me interested and wanting to continue reading in this story. 🤷‍♀️

message 33: by Piper (new)

Piper Van Ness I felt exactly the same. I wanted to like it. It had potential but....verbose is the key problem, here.

I wish I had known this before I bought it.

message 34: by Paula (new)

Paula Sedmock I agree and I DNF this book.

message 35: by დეა (new)

დეა I did enjoy this book, however it really did feel a bit longer than it actually is. Also, I couldn't stand Bumblebee either, loved Emily though.

message 36: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Cook This is where I'm at in this book about halfway through. The story hasn't caught me at this point and every page seems like a thesaurus dump.

message 37: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Bartel Oof. I’m halfway through right now and feeling this very hard. I’ve worried that something is wrong with me based on how much other people seem to adore this, but I am…so bored. And I agree wholeheartedly with your description of Wendell. He’s honestly kind of an ass. I’m tired 😂

message 38: by Francesca (new)

Francesca Margarone I’m on page 179 and I’m STRUGGLING so hard to finish. I could really care less about anything going on in this book lol

message 39: by Susan (new)

Susan Scott I agree, I find this book boring and I don't care for any of the characters except like you said about Poe. I am going to finish it because that is what I do but it will be a drag..

message 40: by Doug (new)

Doug Stone Wow the world building and unexpected plot twists make this a read to savor. Can’t agree with you.

message 41: by Allison (new)

Allison super boring. I was interested in a book about the more classic fae trope and I felt like this book managed to not include anything new or even any real world building with the fae? MC felt similar to Veronica Speedwell and yet lacked her charm and also was somewhat unbelievably gifted during times of crisis by apparently revisiting her wealth of past stories to come up with solutions in like 2 seconds of time… And maybe was also inspired by Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrel but again lacks the charm, complexity and plot of that? I like cozy fantasy but this was just dull and left me disappointed.

message 42: by Katy (new)

Katy W I am MAKING myself finish this book but I am so bored! I thought this was going to be such a good read but it’s getting so old. I can’t wait to be done.

message 43: by Sam (new)

Sam Breach I had to put it on 2.5 speed on audiobook just to get it done in the end. I should have DNF too.

message 44: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Mefford-Mckenzie Ummm… I’m severely disappointed

message 45: by Lacie (new)

Lacie W. Thank you for writing this review because I can take it off my TBR. What is that quote from the book? 😭😭 I’d need a dictionary on standby at all times.

message 46: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Archer This book was set in the early 1900’s in Britten about a female scholar with a PHD from Cambridge writing an encyclopedia, how on earth would that set up not be a clue that there would be a lot of words? Also Emily is a scientist who is intent on her study with the need to prove herself , considering she’s been passed up on Tenure when she was clearly more qualified than the men in her field. The fact that people are put off by her inability to “read the room” because she might have been autistic (I’m on the spectrum myself) and the writer seemed to be making fun of this are not reading that correctly. As a woman on the spectrum, who has a hard time reading the room , connecting with others and being a little too singularity focused. I actually felt seen…..

I'm aware that the language is intentional because she's an academic, I just felt like it was trying way too hard to beat me over the head with that. I get what it was trying to do, it jsut didn't work for me.

And I'm happy the book resonated with you! I've seen multiple views on this, I know some readers on the spectrum who felt really well represented by it and I have friends on the spectrum who DNF'd or finished but disliked the book because it made them uncomfortable. My own issue was never with Emily's characterization, but with how her treatment by the MMC came off as mocking her for autistic-coded traits, in my reading. This is obviously not something that was felt by every reader and I don't think anyone is right or wrong for it, it's just how it read to me and contributed even more to Brambelby being a character I already didn't like.

message 48: by Karissa (new)

Karissa Tomlinson I’d say 2.5 for me. This was almost a dnf as it took me 2? months to finally finish it. I agree it was boring for the most part. The climax was too close to the end and really left too much to be desired. It felt like the author rushed the ending and ran out of things to say.
I also agree that Poe is the best character

message 49: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Gull I really appreciate your review. I have a hard time reading books that are run on descriptions. I do see how it's nice for others, but not for me. I may try it via the library because you never know! I'll find you on tiktok

message 50: by Raoul (new)

Raoul Thanks for the review. Allowed me to finally DNF it at 74%.
