Flo "tragicomedy of humankind" - so rightly put. This luscious gem of a review reminded me that my copy's been on my shelf for too long. I've been wanting to read it for months, in fact, I added it to my 2018 reading plans. I'll try to remedy that as soon as I can.
It was a delight to read your reflections and the vivid sensations this book has elicited. This García Márquez is a classic, and you explained the reasons for its classic status with great eloquence. :) Splendid write-up.

Quo Gaurav: An excellent, insightful & very detailed review of the masterwork by Gabriel Marquez. I enjoyed reading your commentary & the added graphics seem complimentary to your review. I particularly liked your reference to "frontiers of reality" within the novels of Marquez, also comparing him to Cervantes, who may have been the first author to employ what we now label "magical realism". Well done! Bill

Thanks a lot Quo for your kind words. I'm glad that you like it. I was particularly impressed with his prose style of mixing realism with magic elements. yeah, Cervantes may be said to be the initiator of the genre or rather we should say that it encompasses many genres.

Quo Gaurav: A really interesting & insightful review of a memorable novel by Marquez. I especially enjoyed your comment about a scene that involves the "meeting ground of memory & desire" and the quote about "2 nostalgias facing each other like 2 mirrors". I appreciated 100 Years of Solitude even more with a 2nd reading, one of those books that not only endure but are enhanced with a rereading! Bill

Thanks a lot, Bill for your kind words. I too enjoyed it more on my second reading, there are some books which demand multiple readings from you, I guess it is one of those.

Hope you are doing fine, what are you reading nowadays ?

Dmitri Hi Guarav! I know this is so gauche, but I’m halfway through the new Netflix series without having read the novel, although I’ve read two of his others. At the risk of being a literalist I have been trying to figure out what this book is about. The best I can come up with so far is the effect of European colonization on indigenous people, their ways of life and worldviews. Great review and best wishes for the upcoming new year.

Thanks a lot, Dmitri. Yeah, that could be one of the interpretations however, I guess, overall it talks about the solitude of human existence- though we have devised ways and means to keep ourselves engaged, to do away with the eternal loneliness of humanity but how well have we succeeded in it, if at all we have :)
