Meg Weichelt Geez! I thought it was just me! I'm only on page 100 (or thereabouts) and I'm struggling with it so much! Unsure if I'll be able to finish this one.

Marziah I finished the book. It still remains one of my least favorite books read during my 20+ years of book club membership for many of the same reasons you cited.

Stephanie Saffo Reading it now and I am struggling to continue with it also!

Gabrielle REALLY??? gosh it's one of my favorites and most ppl think I have pretty good taste in books! :o) so shocked at the people who didn't care for it or found it a chore. Of course, I NEVER agree w ppl who complain about long books as what is better than sinking your teeth into a good, long book? But I found this book anything but a chore. It's almost like people have VASTLY different opinions or smthg!!! (Lol, but still does surprise me when things seem so much one way for you and so much another way for others).

Marziah Seriously, Gabrielle... Just because people didn't like this rambling book doesn't mean that they don't have good taste in books or don't read or enjoy long books. It just means they didn't enjoy this book.

I read many long books - some well over 500 pages. This book just was not my cup of tea.

Diane I couldn't agree more with the comments from the people who don't like this book. To the best of my recollection, this is the only book that I've ever started and just couldn't force myself to finish. I usually convince myself to give her 100 pages and by then, I'm either caught up in the story or unwilling to throw away the time I've already put into the book and go ahead and finish. This one was just too torturous to keep going.

message 8: by Jim (new)

Jim I always feel guilty abandoning a book, especially one that has been recommended by close friends, but the writing in this book is far too dense and the colloquial language, even for a fellow southerner, is tiresome. The nursing home business is a complete waste of space. Too bad because the subject of the memories of a boy soldier should be pretty captivating.

message 9: by Angeline (new)

Angeline Walsh Yeah, the story’s not about her husband - it’s about HER. And she tells ALL. Nice reading comprehension skills, Suzanna. Bravo.
