Char I feel like a fun creature feature this month! Give me what you got!

You know the rules :)

- Any of our previous group reads are not eligible so please see post 19.

- No self author promo, authors can't nominate their own books since we're keeping this fun and fair for everyone.

- Books that receive the most +1 are more likely to make it into the poll, so choose wisely if you want to support a fellow nomination :) it will have a higher chance to make it on the poll.

Brian Edlin I'd like to nominate MEOW by Brian Edlin (yes, my own — hope that's allowed!). It's a creature-feature at heart: a small town, a forbidden book, a cracked mirror… and a black kitten that is very much not just a kitten. An ancient, hungry thing travels through reflections, and the cat is never far from it. Short, nasty, and made for a fall group read.

Ocean reads :-) Forgive me if you've already done any of these, btw!

The Fungus by Harry Adam Knight- not quite a creature, but it's close and lots of fun.

I haven't read this one yet, but Prophesy by Davit Seltzer is one of them that I've been curious about. So far, feels like a fun, campy and more gross-out version of the Southern Reach series to me!

You post your nomination and any +1s in this thread. See message #18 before posting to make sure your choice wasn't a previous group read. All previous reads are listed alphabetically there.

I can't believe this hasn't been read yet! I'd go for a reread too. A bit dated now, but a horror classic must-read. +1

TJ (TaksBooksNSpooks on YT) Ahh the alphabetical Previous Reads list. Thanks, That's better 😁😊

The theme is Creature Feature. I Am Legend is about vampires.

WendyB Lisa - *HowlBeSatReading*🐺 wrote: "I thought they were a creature?..."

It's up to Char how she would like to define the theme but I think of
Creature Features as non-human, involving animals or insects that have mutated or are mythical.

message 31: by Ninnisha|Roberta (new)

Ninnisha|Roberta I don't wanna take away Char's reply, and I'm sure that one's coming, but already in the message is "Give me your best ideas for killer animals/science gone wrong/swarms that have lost their minds-type books!" which seems like a definition already to me.

message 32: by Jason (new)

Jason I've got Monumental by Adam Nevill on my TBR. Maybe someone who has read it can vouch if it's a creature feature or not...

The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham

The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham

I know its sci-fi; but there are creatures; and this is actually kinda creepy.

message 40: by Netanella (new)

Netanella Classic creature features include Dracula, the Wolf Man, and the Mummy. King Kong and the Creature from the Black Lagoon came soon after. I can understand why vampires can be considered creatures, in this original context. But I understand that this is Char's call.

message 41: by Alan (last edited Oct 17, 2026 03:20PM) (new)

Alan Philip wrote: "

As stated earlier, previous group read, ergo, not eligible.

Previous group read therefore ineligible. Check message 18 before nominating.

description

Ultimately it will be Char's call since she's hosting the read, but the statement above sums it up perfectly for me. Mummies and vampires and the like are "creatures" but don't match the intent of the theme this month, as per what was sent in the email.

message 47: by Heather (new)

Heather I have Monumental by Adam Nevill checked out from the library.
Haven’t started it yet, I tried “leafing” through it a little bit to answer both our questions without ruining anything… I don’t have an answer. If anyone can clear this up for us that would be great!

message 48: by Heather (new)

Heather I +1 The Swarm

message 49: by liliana (new)

liliana Milkteeth by Caitlin Starling. I started the ARC and I am definitely invested. I believe it comes out late October or early November. If the latter, might be better as a December nomination.
-Features: unique vampire biology
-(sorry if not yet published books are not allowed)

I haven't read it (though I want to) but from some reviews I've perused the cover is misleading as far as "creature feature" goes. I keep seeing 'brutal wilderness survival tale and a deeply atmospheric work of folk horror. " and "superntural" in descriptions. Unless someone else has read it and can confirm there is a "creature/creatures" I'm thinking it's prob not.
