I usually stay away from anything too "speculative." I glaze over too quickly when I cannot anchor myself in a concrete understanding of stakes or at least the rules of the realm/why any of it matters.
I’m okay with speculative fiction and SF (less so fantasy with dragons etc) as long as it’s recognisably human. That’s not really the problem with this book for me. It’s more that the stakes are intentionally vague. The book is more like a fable or Kafkaesque setting, with modern day reference points like cell phones, but the allegory is unclear.
