Kerry Do you suspect AI? I've read a few variations which heavily reek of it

IMHO: AI books usually have good grammar. The punctuation and sentence structure are good. I've read books that were written with varying degrees of AI assistance, and I've found that continuity errors, unworkable timelines, impossible travel times (for Regency time, including people and mail), elaborate descriptions that often give inanimate objects feelings or thoughts, and the dreaded "not this, not that, but the other" construct are among the best indicators of AI assistance in the writing of a story.

Often AI stories start very well, but then they start to go sideways, and the longer they go, they increasingly stop making sense. This is one reason that I hesitate to read new authors with books that are less than 150 pages.

Based on all this, I would say that this book did not have AI input. I don't think it would have all these grammar errors.
