Real bummer that this kind of turned out to be more of a drama than a mystery! Appreciate your honest review of this, Yun!
Terrific review as always! I read a couple and then the format lost its appeal for me! Looking forward to your thoughts on the others!

Thanks, Chantel! The mystery did eventually show up, but it wasn't until the last third. :)

Thanks, Jayme! Yeah I can kind of see that. It really feels like at times, the author tried to shoehorn the whole story into this format.

Enjoyed your fabulous review, Yun, although disappointed that this wasn’t what was hoped for. On to the next!☺️
Good review, Yun. Why have I not been getting your reviews among my Goodreads update emails for the past few months?

Thanks, Shannon! Oh no, GR is probably acting up again! I've been running into so many issues lately.
Great review, Yun! I loved The Appeal, but your critiques are valid. I will say - her other books really do emphasize the mystery/intrigue angle in a much more up front manner.

Thanks, Avi! That's what I'm hoping for, so thanks for confirming! Glad you loved this one. :)

I must admit I really liked this one Yun, but you have written a very fair critical review, as a lot of what you don't like, I liked! For example, loved the small pettiness of it all crossed against the complexity of the 'investigation'.

I'm glad you loved it, Baba, for some of the exact reasons I didn't. It really goes to show that what works for one reader doesn't always work for another and vice versa. :)
Let's hope the author worked out the kinks in this one and has better ones ahead for you! Great review, Yun. 💗
Excellent review, Yun.. I did enjoy the epistolary format although it seemed a bit long. Her Christmas story was shorter and much more fun to read.

Thanks, Darla! Glad to know the Christmas one is more fun... I've got that on my tbr! :)
The main "appeal" of this book in my eyes is the epistolary format. I'm quite curious to see how a mystery can unfold through correspondences. But maybe I should reduce my expectations considering your feedback. Thanks for the clear and honest review, Yun!

Interesting Yun...I've witnessed a few other authors who've used this narrative approach and found it disjointed..but writing is art, and individual tastes vary..on to the next one!

A fine review, Yun! I probably would pass as this does not seem a good candidate for audio, but who knows?

Yun, I couldn’t agree more with so much of what you said about The Appeal, the epistolary format had me so excited at the start too — there’s something so fresh and engaging about piecing a story together through emails and messages. But like you, I found myself wishing the mystery would take center stage sooner. Wading through the small-town drama felt a bit much at times, and it affected the pacing for me, making it more and more difficult to stay engaged, personally.
That said, I also found the ending satisfying, and I’m curious to see if Hallett’s other books refine some of those pacing issues. It’s always interesting to watch how authors evolve from their debuts, I had no idea this was her first book, so thanks for that tidbit! Lovely review.

Thanks, L.! Glad we felt the same on this one. I'm looking forward to giving the author another try or two. I find the format interesting, so maybe my issue is just with this mystery and the way it went down. If you give read another by Hallett, hope you enjoy more too! :)

Awesome review, Yun. I have no idea why I have this book on my wishlist! I can't remember why I put it there. I don't think I'm going to enjoy it 😣 I just don't like reading long, tedious paragraphs of investigation findings!
