Jarrah Warragul is fourteen and lives in the Australian outback. When he was eleven, he saw a shadow move inside one of the two Ancestral Geodes that kept his little sister Aisha well. He was afraid nobody would believe him, so he said nothing. The next morning that Geode was gone.
The half that remains drops one red crystal every morning, and after every crystal dropped, Aisha grows a little weaker. Jarrah knows the number without counting: fewer than two hundred mornings left.
Then, on a Saturday treasure hunt with his friends, a pack of eight dingoes comes straight for him, and the ground rises up and drives them off. His teacher, Mr. Mungurru, tells him what that means. The land has chosen him as the Guardian of the Root, one of seven young Guardians across the world, each tied to one element (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Ether, Light and Spirit).
Jarrah then has to make a devastating decision: stay at home and watch his sister slowly wither away, or leave his family and step into the unknown on a single promise of a teacher to help him find the stolen Geode.
