When Dean mentioned he was mixed race it did throw me off for a minute because I just associated Dean with Shane. But I didn’t really mind it. But I do enjoy your explanation here. That you cast whomever not always matching up the narrators race to the race of the character in the story. Honestly never thought many authors did that. Narrators are voice actors so their talent shines through no matter who they’re portraying. But I’m glad you have more of an awareness and are opening yourself up to hiring other narrators in the future. How else to do we find the greats like Shane & Joe ;)
Thank you so much Stephanie! I'm learning from my mistakes and trying to make changes going forward. I appreciate your thoughts on this. And I hope to share some new voices in upcoming books this fall!
Looking for more talent is pretty great but honestly I didn't have a problem with this, and I say this being Mexican. If a white or an asian narrator could do play our accent I really don't mind.
Thanks for taking the time to answer this question. I had a similar question and you've answered it.
I'm almost finished the book and what a ride!
Hi Lauren - Thank you so much for taking the tim eto answer this question. I was SO confused by this. I appreciate that you took the time to consider why casting a black actor would be the best decision. I love your books and always look forward to them. Thanks again!
Hi Lauren - just listened to A Guy Walks Into My Bar. I also read you comment above earlier today and of course the question that lead to the comment. It took me several hours but as a black woman i must ask. What does a black English man sound like? I have a a brother who was born and lives in London and when i speak with him, there is no inflection in his voice to differentiate him from a black man or a white one. You are a phenomenal author, I love, love your books, and i just wanted to say although in these days and times its important to be sensitive when it comes to issues such as race, i want you to know this isn’t one of those times, and I sensed your need for your response to be the right one. I’m not trying to be confrontational with this comment. I just wanted you to know that Shane West voice was perfect. Look forward to reading more of your books.
Regard
Hi Ava! I don't think a Black English man sounds different. But I do think it is important To be more representative in casting when it comes to race because that helps inform an actor's approach and understanding to the character. But I am so glad you liked Shane's voice. I agree that he is fantastic In the role.
