Jason Pym I didn't have such a big impression of the Hobbit as a child, I remember Lord of the Rings more, but I read it to my son a couple years ago and it was such a great experience. That's exactly what it was designed for, such a joy to read to a kid. The only thing was the second half with the Arkenstone etc, did seem oddly divided in two (not that it matters, just not the usual story structure).

M. Jones Do you mean the long 'epilogue'? The end takes its time, that's true, but I always liked the Arkenstone episode as it made Bilbo a true thief, then redeemed him (even though Thorin was right, and Smaug's debts were not his to pay). Those pesky Elves, eh?
