I was a writer publishing pretty prolifically for years. Then my abusive marriage ended and I developed a rare neurological disorder that nearly killed me. So I'm just starting to make a little dip into writing for a regional magazine. I'd like to write a memoir but I figure no one would want to read about a nobody like me. Do you have any advice for me as I begin this writing journey again?
Of course. If you have a story and a desire deep within to tell it, then just access that deep inner drive to tell the story. You are already an experienced author, who loves writing, so I think it will be very healing to tell your story and many others will want to read it. I'd suggest to set some time aside each day or on the weekends, or whenever you can - regularly - and begin the memoir, believing in it. Once you begin, more ideas will come. Every human being has a purpose, I believe, and there are others who will resonate with your memoir. So know that it has a value for others as well. I am sure it does. Read "This Is Not for You," for instance, and see how many people really love that book about some hardships of growing up. Each story, though, is unique. Tell yours your way but with your understanding of the writing craft front and center. Thanks for the question, Tonya. Let me know how it goes.
