Bill Hare I strongly agree with the selected choices. A fellow college classmate of mine who later became an Emmy winner asked me my choice of a series of great American Literature choices for first year college students he would be teaching. I recommended Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY since I believed that the clean and pristine prose was precisely evocative for students launching their college days. I loved the Steinbeck connection because of my reverence for THE GRAPES OF WRATH and OF MICE AND MEN. Fitzgerald and Steinbeck stood as towering beacons of Americana during fascinating periods of American History.
