For many years I travelled by car a lot in my job. I hit on audio books when they were on Cassette Tapes - unravelling those at 70 mph on a motorway was fun......... And who were those irritating people who didn't rewind the tapes? - or worse still forgot to put the last one back in the box! I found that I often went for genres that I didn't read in book format, e.g. Spy stories and Classics. I also put them to use on long family trips - but trying to find a story that would suit all ages was not always successful. I often plumped for Nevil Shute as they are good stories with no "adult" language or "activities". (Innuendos die hard). Although in A Town Like Alice the hero does say - whilst duly tested - "You Bloody Bastard!" just once. We arrived at my rather straight-laced mother in law's house and this is the phrase that my 6 year old son greeted her with.......it was a long weekend! I later set my brother up with several when he was dying of cancer. He was a reader but hadn't come across audio books. By this time we were on CD's so he was able to cope with them. I think it helped to pass the time.
