I think there is a strong case for hope right at the very end. A rifle makes a “crack” when fired and a “click” when empty … plus with weapons the sequence is that when fired someone away from the gun sees the flash first and then hears the crack, presumably this make shift contraption Victor bought on the internet is basically a gun of some sort and light travels faster than sound. To hear a click in the raging storm suggests a noise much much closer to PJ. The very last words, “It is for love. You are doing this for love” could as easily be more of Dickies procrastination or indecision or he maybe even thinks, referring back to page 603/604, of coming out and being true to himself, to have a shot at love with Ryszard, knowing his family will always love him … so back to the “click” PJ hears and the light he sees … Dickie with an unloaded weapon, phone in hand for light at the bunker?.I hope so…
