This is a great question! I believe it is dependent upon the author. A dear friend and writing mentor writes dual time mysteries and psychological thrillers but she loves to read regency romances. For myself I'll read most anything if I like the author's voice aka writing style. But generally for myself I do prefer to read the genres I write in.

I'm always curious if authors (romance in particular) enjoy the genre they primarily write in the most, or if they're gifted with a derivative genre... I know a chap who loves to read sci-fi, but writes great contemporary mystery. He compromised by doing a story about a murder at a convention. 🤣
