Anton A lot of science fiction of old was very plot driven. For instance, the Phillip K. Dick stories of old, Isaac Asimov, C. Clarke and so forth, all wrote plot driven classics.

Whitley Plot is important, but when plot is driven by character, a novel rises to a new level. This is why the Demolished Man and Canticle for Liebowitz, speaking of old science fiction, are both to this day powerful reading experiences.
