I read Erasing History: How Fascists Rewrite the Past to Control the Future by Jason F. Stanley,
Nice recommendation. Stanley is an important voice. I think he exaggerates the similarity with fascism, but he's worth reading, to be sure.
I personally do believe that the "exaggeration" is pretty valid. I do see similarities to current US politics and fascism.
yes, i agree there are similarities. and also differences. the sum total, to me, is not the same thing.
I mean I do agree that we aren't COMPLETELY fascist. The protests and the court are helping out with us not being total fascism. But I believe that we are on the road to being fascists.
Trump has also been getting rid of funds for public schools. If students don't know why fascism is bad, than all our life it be corruption. I disagree with many things about our education system. We shouldn't be ashamed to teach kids on our history. We shouldn't just say "America had slaves and then they were free". We should say the WHOLE story and how blacks are still being discriminated against.
A key question, to me, is the use of violence by the state against political enemies. In Russia, if Putin hates you then you die. In America, if Trump hates you, he gets a sham indictment (like Comey) and the courts throw it out. A big difference. I discussed this with Jonathan Rauch, who wrote a big article on it in The Atlantic, on my Books and More podcast.
