Might I suggest Famine on the Wind: Plant Diseases and Human History is a 1967 book by G.L. Carefoot and E.R. Sprott, and The Advance of the Fungi by E.C. Large (1946). I am a plant pathologist and the famine was not glossed over in the courses I took and books I was assigned. Phytophthora is Latin name meaning what?
