Deborah I hoped Jack's wife proved to be the greater love of his life. In happier circumstances, I like to think Ilona would have prioritised her relationship with Jack but I wouldn't want to think she became miserable with regret either. In the modern story, I hoped the holiday romance blossomed. If not indefinitely then at least into a mutually beneficial rebound relationship and subsequent friendship! I loved Nina so I like to think she experienced love and happiness before the tragedy of war. I was fond of Dr Zobel so I'm glad I wasn't meant to strongly disapprove of him and his failings! The ambiguity was perfect and made me want to re-read in future, which I don't do often.
