Beverly McCall Thank you. Wouldn't it be a nifty idea for each preschool to create a simple picture booklet as a year-end project of their favorite things. They could draw their favorite food and with helped of scripted writing copy a 2-4 word sentence. For example--Ice cream is cold. This would work with the help of a classroom volunteer.

Jane Blythe Beverly when I was teaching full time with my own class we made several books. If we went on an excursion then the following week the children would each dictate a quote as to what their favourite part was, we would type this up and they would illustrate their comment with an appropriate picture and we would turn it into a book. We did the same thing with jokes, as part of show and tell one time the children made up/found a joke at home with their parents then told it to the class at show and tell time, we then typed them all up and the children illustrated theirs and then we made a book and went and read it to some of the older classes at the school. We also had a 'take home story' where I would start the story off then each child would get a turn to take the book home and add to the story, including an illustration, then when the whole class had had a turn the other teacher would write the ending. We did lots of other literacy based things too but these were a couple of my favourites!

Jane Blythe Absolutely! You always hope to foster a lifelong love of books and reading and writing in children while they are young!
