Samuel My sentiments exactly. And I must compliment you on the fact that he's a very well done foil. Both are roughly the same age, employees of the CIA and have a relationship with Anya. But that's where the similarities end. Hawkins loathes Anya. Ryan doesn't. Ryan left the Company, while Hawkins found his calling as employee of the month and star trouble shooter. Ryan's gotten more abrasive over the years, yet still is sane and loyal to his friends, while Hawkins, for all the charm he put on in his Pakistan business trip would probably kick an innocent person off a rooftop simply because it amused him. 1/2

Samuel When reading Black List and Deception Game, I found the operations Hawkins and Drake ran as perfect counterpoints to each other. When Hawkins fires his first shot in "Black List", he behaved like he was John friggin Matrix in commando. Lots of devastation, very terrifying and awesome, but at the same time, causing substantial property and collateral damage, not to mention being highly inefficient. The result being the one person on earth he wants to kill the most slips through a large hole in the net he tried to cast.

Samuel Contrast with Drake in deception game. While the operation he's running is far more hurriedly put together in Libya compared to Hawkin's first action in Black List, he's not doing it to rack up a kill count or burn his target's house down for laughs like Hawkins would probably do. Drake tries to be as efficient as he can be (as the inevitable, disastrous complications ensure) and even stocks up on non lethal kit to rush through the opposition, even if it isn't the most practical solution.

Samuel Which makes me think, that for all his undeniably impressive combat abilities and intelligence, Drake is by far the superior operator compared to Hawkins (events of Ghost Target notwithstanding). Hawkins might not be limited by any pesky moral concerns like Drake agonizes over but it also means, like Anya noted, he's got no restraint and overdoes things in a catastrophic manner like he did in the Scandinavian cabin.

Samuel He's Cain's hammer. Inefficient but perfectly capable of killing the target if swung at the right moment.
