Clean water and access to plumbing is a basic minimum standard the Atlanteans went with, in order to maintain humane and disease-free conditions. There was no other technology the Candidates got. Everything else, such as taking personal responsibility for cleaning yourself and your clothing was left up to the teens. Another aside -- people all around the world go for lifetimes without washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators, or other familiar home technology. My family didn't own a refrigerator until we moved to the West (perishable food was cooled on the windowsill in the winter, or consumed the same day). There are many people in the world who still do not have these things, even in the more developed countries. And hand-washing laundry is such a fundamental basic skill worldwide that it does not even need an explanation. Besides, they only had two changes of clothing, that's practically nothing to wash, can do it in under 5 minutes. Believe me, every detail of the world in these series has been thought though with care, and there is a logical reason for all things. Anything that has been left hanging will be revealed in the next books. :-) Do come down to the TAG dedicated fan discussion forum to ask more questions and talk to other fans of this series:

As for the washing machines... I see what you are saying and the direction you went with it. I totally understand that washing machines are a luxury. I just figured that since they gave the candidates showers and sinks and had other technology and knew that the teens had limited clothes that it would make sense to provide washers to save time. ^_^ But yeah... I get ya. The whole boot camp idea makes sense. Thanks so much for answering my question and so quickly too! I really hope you're health gets better (I think I read somewhere you were having issues). I totally understand the craziness that comes when health issues flare. <3 <3 <3
