Karen Maitland Brilliant idea. They say an untidy desk means a creative mind, but I wouldn't have thought of using the desk clutter itself to create. I find that many ideas for my novels come when completely unrelated facts seem to collide together in my head to cause a spark, so this is the same process but using what is in front of you.

Jon Mackley Totally agree about the two ideas, Karen. Stephen Donaldson described it in the Afterword of the first in his "Gap" series, the first idea establishes the situation (backdrop or character) and the second is what sets all events in motion.

Karen Maitland Great way of describing it. I also loved the idea of looking at the place the characters are standing in. Often pulling a character right out of the novel or story and watching them in a completely different situation, does, as you say, help you to understand a side of their personality you may not have seen before. I think too watching at a time in their life which is outside the timeframe of the novel can give great insight too.
