Jason R Richter Like hand guns and nipple clamps, most people use adverbs incorrectly. People will write "he banged the trash can lids together loudly." As compared to what? He banged them gently?

Adverbs are taught to schoolchildren as if every sentence needs an adverb. This is not true.

I campaign ceaselessly for abstinence only adverb training with the expectation that a few will slip through and impregnate sentences with people merrily skipping and loudly shouting.

That may not be a popular stance with my liberal (arts teaching) constituents, but I'll take that chance at the midterm election.

I'm Jason R. Richter and I approved this message.

Ross Willard And I think you're showing incredible naivete. We all know that children WILL USE ADVERBS. Whether or not we approve, whether or not they do so wisely, they will do it. I say, give them to tools to use adverbs SAFELY and RESPONSIBLY, we're only going to see poor writing spread among the youth.
