Very true, Jane!!
Jane, I'm glad to hear that not all romance stories need to have a HEA. I haven't written the story I want to for that vey reason, it either doesn't have an ending (yet) or it's not that it is sad. It is more that it is a learning or understanding that it is best they are not together.
I think in life that is the truth.
