I've noticed a marked uptick on Amazon lately of people offering relatively rare items at highly inflated prices. I doubt they even have inventory in many cases - they apparently tend to respond to an order by buying a copy at the normal price and reshipping it at their price.
I think you may well be right Richard. It does strike me as being legal but unethical. I would feel duped if I paid that much for a book only to realize I hadn't searched thoroughly enough on the site. If you learn any more about this practice, I would be grateful if you shared it.
It seems these vendors often manage to relist the book separately from the listing that has the legitimate new copies. It's perversely flattering to see my $79.95 textbook being offered at $450, but still quite fraudulent. Amazon seems to respond by putting its blue 'prime' checkmark by the legitimate vendor's entry.
