I’m having difficulty identifying a “couple”in the science fiction literature in the traditional sense. However, if we can expand this question to include other “dyads” and “triads,” then I must vote for that inimitable and inseparable trio - James T. Kirk, Dr. “Bones” McCoy, and Science Officer Spock: Their relationship, including bickering, humor and trauma, will never be surpassed as the ultimate expression of mutual love and unconditional friendship and loyalty.
They did share a lot of love, though I think you're right that's probably not quite what was intended! What about Paul and Chani from Dune? Or Tyler and Diane from Spin? I am not as well read in sci-fi (working on it!) and as I mention I don't seem to particularly note romantic themes, but even The Princess of Mars has a love story!
