I love creating characters and worlds too. I've never been to a conference though, I'm something of an introvert and I suspect I'd feel like a fraud.
The conferences are the best. You can be an introvert and be around others like yourself who are introverts too. It is very easy to strike up a conversation with another writer, no matter what they write.
