Plenty of my homeschooled siblings never wanted to be a writer. =) But yes, I agree it does seem to be a fairly common hobby among homeschoolers.
Okay, so I exaggerated just a wee bit. :-) It is a pretty natural choice of hobby, though, because reading is highly encouraged among most homeschoolers, as an activity that is both recreational and educational. Because most homeschoolers read a lot, they come to greatly admire authors., and because they admire authors, they aspire to write. Of course, the vast majority probably never get beyond a few scribbles in a notebook somewhere. But to judge from the number that actually reach the self-publishing stage, you'd think almost all of us started out to be writers!
Ah yes, the reading being highly encouraged does make sense... I've sometimes wondered why it is that homeschoolers seem to be so into writing stories. =)
I think for my siblings and I... our Mom read aloud to us almost every day... good books that really enriched our minds... and in we were required to take creative writing and write a paragraph of something every day...
I think that homeschooled 'kids', move towards writing because their minds are so open... because their imaginations are unfettered. They have freedom to pursue and explore because of the a scene of peer pressure... and I think most children are creative.... if given the chance to express it.
We home schooled authors DO seem to be bursting out of the closets... don't we? :)
