This is a spoiler. Bailey never had very long to live. Instead of just wasting away, he got to go out a superhero. And going out with a flash of light outshines a life filled with days just grew dimmer. As I wrote in my review, "poor doomed Bailey". Yet by his last act, he would be remembered by the whole town, not just Fern, Ambrose and his family, forever. There is a Jewish saying "Whoever saves a life, saves the whole world". So poor "crippled" Bailey - he saved the whole world.
