I did this with Dangerous Liaisons. I got involved in the theatre through providing dogs for musicals, among other productions, so I used the setting and developed the plot round it.
I haven't done this in my novels, but I did set the first one in my hometown. Maybe my life has been too conventional to build a story around, though it might be fun to try.
