I know this is kind of awkward, me adding my own answer, but I just wanted to chip in. I think you should just write the way you would speak. If you don't want all of your books to sound the same, ask for some help! If you need to expand your vocabulary, I'd become a total nut and start googling word lists (or ask for some help again if you want to be "normal". Humph.)
