This is a wonderful idea. Now, that 5 euros a day...does that cover food, housing, and everything else? I would love to do something like this as well. After college, and once I've saved a few grand of course.
That £5 (not 5 euros) is now nearer £6 or £7 as prices have gone up. It includes food (including 1 meal at a restaurant each day), laundry, a hotel room (en suite with internet, a fan, a TV and a mountain view), snacks and toiletries. It doesn't include flights, visas or travel. If you want to do lots of activities you'll spend more, but if you're spending your time writing you probably won't.
I stayed in McLeod Ganj, where the Dalai Lama lives. It's a little touristy, but beautiful and kinda cool. Don't forget to haggle over the price of your hotel room. You can do that in India.
Thank you, very much. I'm fascinated now with the prospect of moving to India. Except, I can't seem to find a hotel, B&B, or any other place to stay that's nearly as cheap as 6 or 7 pounds a day. There are some really great places for $40 a night. I wonder if maybe it's cheaper there than advertised online? Or maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. Is there a website I could go to for the best and most accurate information and prices of Indian hotels?
I stayed at Victoria House before, in McLeod Ganj, and am back there now. Before it cost me Rs6000 off season and Rs7500 on season for a month. Right now it costs Rs9500 a month on season (£3.50 a night). It'll be cheaper in the winter.
There are plenty of cheap hotels in India; in the big cities you can just walk around the bus station or train station and see them lined up (although they may not be that nice in those areas). Wikitravel may also list other places. The one for McLeod Ganj (http://wikitravel.org/en/Dharamsala) mentions a few hotels for between Rs100 and Rs250 (£1-£3).
