That's it in a nutshell, human nature. Everyone has their own method, but the characters also have their own personalities. Lots of people swear by brainstorming and creating charts of random ideas, but I just can't work like that, I can't even get involved if I'm in a learning group, I need to be structured and think directly from one point to the next. Yet I couldn't pre-plan chapters, or even the plot. I know the story, I know the end, but it's instinct from thereonin, dependent upon the characters and their actions and reactions.
